Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco have a unique history that dates back to 2008.
The adorable pair, who just released their new album, I Said I Loved You First, recently revealed their first impressions of each other during a guest appearance on iHeartRadio's On Purpose with Jay Shetty.
"I thought she hated me," Blanco candidly remarked before diving into the origins of their story, which began 16 years ago when Gomez's mom, Mandy Teefey, planned for them to meet and write a song together.
"Obviously, 99% of it was in my head. I was talking to her and said, ‘Oh my God, I have so many good single guy friends … We have dinners at the house all the time, you should come over sometime.’ I wasn’t even thinking about anything, and we’re talking about our ideal date and this and that."
He continued:
"I want her to be in our friend group, and I want to make sure this thing is smoothed out so the song goes well."
Blanco and Gomez soon became friends and would send each other "ugly selfies" back and forth. The "It Ain't Me" hitmaker unveiled that she fell for Blanco when they first started exchanging selfies, but he had "no idea."
Both Gomez and the producer went on to date other people for 15 years before rekindling a spark in 2023, per People, and ultimately getting engaged in 2024.
