A teaching assistant in South Carolina, Alexander Paul Robertson Lewis, was arrested and charged after allegedly using a spray that mimics the smell of fecal matter at West Florence High School, causing significant disruption and damage. The Florence County Sheriff's Office reported that Lewis, 32, was taken into custody on Friday (September 20) and charged with disturbing schools and malicious injury to property.
The incidents reportedly occurred multiple times between August 25 and September 19, leading to approximately $55,000 in damages, including harm to the school's air conditioning system. Several students required medical attention for respiratory issues due to the spray. According to the Florence County Sheriff's Office, surveillance footage showed Lewis walking through the school with the spray can in hand.
Lewis claimed he was using a lemon-scented hand sanitizer, which deputies found in his car. Despite his denials, he was charged based on the video evidence and his statements. After a bond hearing on September 20, Lewis was released on a bond set at just over $9,000. The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be filed.
