Demi Lovato is expanding her skillset with her very first cookbook.

The "Confident" singer, 33, recently spoke to People about her upcoming cookbook One Plate at a Time: Recipes for Finding Freedom with Food and how far she has come in healing amid her "complicated journey" with food. Lovato struggled with bulimia for years and that impacted not only her diet but even simply being around food.

"When I was first in recovery, I was so overwhelmed by food that stepping into a grocery store would make me break down into tears," she said.

Lovato was able to begin working through her complicated relationship with food through years of recovery and cooking with friends, specifically noting how a spaghetti squash salad they made together helped something "click" within her.

"That was the first recipe that I cooked with friends where I was like, 'Wow, this is actually really fun,'" she said. "When I actually stepped foot into the kitchen and had so much joy come from it, and I was proud of I made."

The "Sorry Not Sorry" hitmaker is channeling her own experience into her new project, which she hopes will open doors for others with similar struggles or those just starting out in the kitchen.

"I wanted to create a cookbook that was for people who may have had disordered eating in the past or are just intimidated to step foot into the kitchen for the first time," she said, adding, "It's just about getting in the kitchen and getting comfortable around cooking, and that will set you up for success later down the road with more recipes."

One Plate at a Time: Recipes for Finding Freedom with Food comes out March 31.
